In 1992, McLaren faced the challenge of developing, for the first time, a semiautomatic transmission For Ayrton Senna’s and Gerhard Berger’s cars. In the previous year, Senna had won his third world title, but due to some rule changes and the big technological improvements made by Williams, the team from Woking would have a hard time in beating the rival team, the home of Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese.
Before the pre-season was over, Senna and Berger drove the new McLaren at Silverstone, and shared their first impressions about the car – which wouldn’t come close to repeating the success from previous years. Still, Senna would go on to win three races in 1992: the Monaco, Italy and Hungary GPs.
